Paragliding Safety and Right-of-Way Rules: Collision Avoidance Guide for Pilots
Instructions for avoiding mid-air collisions (part of paragliding regulations) are quite few and simple. These rules are also applied to many other aircraft to prevent collisions in the air.
To keep the sky a safe playground, every pilot must master these 4 "Golden Rules": ✔️ No aircraft is allowed to fly too close to another, as this could create a risk of collision ✔️ Flying in formation is not permitted unless all pilots agree ✔️ When following the rules below to yield flight paths, an aircraft is not allowed to overtake another from above, below, or in front, except when there is ample space ✔️ Aircraft with the right of way along a flight path must maintain their route and speed This rule is especially important in competitions, as there are often many paragliders in the sky, and every pilot must follow it to prevent collisions.
↔️ Head-on rules
✔️ Head-on Encounters: When two aircraft approach each other head-on, both pilots must alter their course to the right. ✔️ Ridge Soaring: - The pilot with the ridge on their right has the right of way (as they cannot turn right to avoid collision). - The pilot with the ridge on their left must give way by turning away from the ridge.
⏩ Overtaking rules
✔️ When overtaking another aircraft, you must ensure there is enough space for the aircraft being overtaken and be careful not to disturb other aircraft. In many countries, regulations clearly state overtaking is allowed only on the right, while overtaking on the left is prohibited; in some places, both sides are permitted. ✔️ When flying near a cliff, the safest route is usually to turn around rather than overtake. If you need to overtake, make sure you can do so smoothly and safely.
🤝 Right of way rules
✔️ Hierarchy of Priority: Powered aircraft must yield to paragliders, hang gliders, gliders, and balloons. Gliders yield to paragliders, hang gliders, and balloons. Paragliders/hang gliders must yield to balloons. ✔️ Converging at Same Level: When two aircraft of the same category converge at the same altitude, the aircraft on the left shall give way to the one on its right. ✔️ Collision Avoidance: In case of potential collision, the higher aircraft must yield to the lower one.
🛬 Landing rules
✔️ Highest Priority: Landing aircraft have right of way over all others. ✔️ Lowest First: The lowest pilot has priority; do not cut off or overtake anyone on approach. ✔️ Stay Alert: Check your surroundings (especially the left) for other pilots landing or taking off. ✔️ Clear Fast: Vacate the landing zone immediately. You are responsible for any damage if your gear blocks the path.
🌀 Thermal flying rules
✔️ Direction of Turn: When entering a thermal, you must match the turn direction of pilots already established inside. All pilots in the same or nearby cores must circle in the same direction. ✔️ Altitude Rule: If two pilots find themselves circling in opposite directions, the lower pilot must change their direction to match the higher pilot. ✔️ Safety: Circling in opposite directions is strictly prohibited as it significantly increases the risk of mid-air collisions.
