A Golden-Season Day in Lao Chai with Sapa Paragliding

Some places announce their season. Muong Hoa Valley is one of them: when the rice ripens, the whole basin changes colour in a matter of days — green to deep gold, terrace stacked on terrace like the grain rings of an enormous tree. This is the story of one golden-season day in Lao Chai village, told through the photographs of the passengers who flew that day with Sapa Paragliding, the first paragliding company to operate in Sa Pa.

🌾 The morning the valley turned gold

That morning, the narrow concrete path leading into the landing field at Lao Chai was quiet except for the wind. The windsock at the edge of the paddies held one steady direction. Above the cloud line on the far ridge, two orange wings were circling, waiting to land. It is the most familiar sign of a good flying day in Sa Pa: steady wind, high cloud, and rice fields gold all the way to the foot of the mountains.

The golden season in Muong Hoa is short. Depending on the year and on each individual terrace, the rice usually ripens between the second half of August and mid-September, and is harvested soon after. Arrive in the right week and the valley looks nothing like it did three weeks earlier.

🚐 Fifteen minutes up to the Hang Da take-off site

The Sapa Paragliding take-off site sits in Hang Da village, about a 15-minute drive from Sa Pa town centre, at roughly 1,500m. The full experience takes about 90 minutes, including transfer, preparation and the flight itself. At take-off, passengers put on a helmet and harness and hear the pilot's short briefing on how to run. That is the entire job: stand tall, take a few steps in rhythm with the pilot, and don't sit down early.

Every flight is a tandem flight with a pilot. The Sapa Paragliding team includes both Vietnamese and international pilots who fly this valley year-round and know how its wind behaves hour by hour.

🪂 The moment the ground lets go

The first feeling isn't fear. It's silence. No engine, just air moving through the lines. Then the eyes open, and the valley is there, whole: terraces curving around the hillsides, the wooden roofs of the village, a pale footpath drawn straight across the paddies like a single brushstroke.

The camera on the pole sweeps once — and the whole valley folds into a small golden planet with the canopy hanging in the sky above it. It is the photograph almost everyone brings home from Muong Hoa, and the one shot that cannot be taken from the ground.

❤️ The moments you can't stage

People do funny things in the air. Some let go and make a heart with their hands. Some stretch their legs out and laugh at the sight of their own feet floating above a green ridge. Some stay silent for the entire flight and say only one thing on landing: “That was beautiful.” The pilot films and photographs the whole flight, so nobody has to hold a phone. The photos and video are handed over after landing.

⭐ The Vietnamese flag wing over Muong Hoa

The Sapa Paragliding wing in the colours of the national flag flies over Muong Hoa Valley all year round, not only on public holidays. When it passes over ripe rice, the red and the gold line up into a frame that could not be anywhere else — and it is the shot passengers ask for most during harvest season.

🌄 Landing among the paddies, staying for the sunset

The landing field is in Lao Chai village itself, right beside Lao Chai street, in the middle of the terraces. Once they are down, almost nobody is in a hurry to leave. Late afternoon is when the valley is at its best: the sun drops into the gap between the ridges and lays a sheet of gold across the whole field.

During the flight, passengers can leave bags and suitcases at the landing field. The shuttle between the landing field and the take-off site is part of the experience, so nobody has to go back for a vehicle.

Someone stands in the rice with arms open, someone carries a bundle of dried grass flowers, someone turns their back to the sun for a photo that still feels warm months later. Fly first, then walk a few hundred metres through the paddies — that is the second half of the trip, and it costs nothing.

🏅 The certificate at the end of the day

At the end of the flight, every passenger receives a Sapa Paragliding Certificate of Achievement, with their name, the date of the flight and the signature of the pilot who flew with them.

In the clubhouse, one wall is covered with photographs of past flights — Vietnamese passengers and international ones, people in their twenties and people in their seventies. The two passengers in these photos held their certificates in front of that wall and grinned. In the morning they had stood in the paddies watching a wing pass overhead. By evening, they were the ones in the sky.

✈️ Sapa Paragliding — the first paragliding company in Sa Pa

Sapa Paragliding was founded by pilot Dang Van My, after a long period of surveying the terrain and the wind conditions of Muong Hoa Valley. It is the first paragliding company to operate in Sa Pa, and the site was built around safety from the start: fixed take-off and landing fields, a standard operating procedure, and a team of professional Vietnamese and international pilots.

  • Flying hours: 07:00 – 18:00, weather permitting, 365 days a year
  • Take-off: Hang Da village, about 15 minutes by car from Sa Pa centre, around 1,500m elevation
  • Landing: Lao Chai village, next to Lao Chai street, in the Muong Hoa terraces
  • Duration: about 90 minutes for the full experience
  • Included: flight equipment, tandem pilot, in-flight photos and video, flight certificate
  • Shuttle between the landing field and the take-off site, with baggage storage during the flight

Sapa Paragliding is flight-authorised by the Operations Department, General Staff, Ministry of National Defence, and holds paragliding business licence No. 02/GCN-SVHTT issued by the Lao Cai Department of Culture and Sports.

📋 Booking, deposit and repeat-flight offers

A deposit of 100,000 VND per passenger holds your slot (200,000 VND for two passengers). Schedules are flexible and no fixed hour is required: changes and cancellations are free with 2 hours' notice. The reason is simple — mountain weather changes from session to session, and a group flies faster or slower depending on the day. There is no fixed “golden hour”; closer to your date, the flight coordinators check the forecast and tell you the best window.

Repeat-flight offers: a second flight on the same day is 15% off; a second flight within the year is 150,000 VND off. Both apply to passengers booking directly with Sapa Paragliding.
