Fansipan is the highest peak of the Hoang Lien Son range, on the border of Lao Cai and Lai Chau; the summit marker reads 3,143 m. Most visitors go up in a morning by the Muong Hoa funicular and the cable car, while walkers take the trail from Tram Ton.

Overview

The usual trip has three legs: the Muong Hoa funicular from Sa Pa station inside Sun Plaza, the three-rope cable car across Muong Hoa Valley to Fansipan station, then about 600 stone steps (or a short second funicular) to the marker. Allow about four hours up and down.

The story of the peak

The 3,143 m figure dates from a French survey in 1909. A re-survey published in 2019 gave 3,147.3 m, but the marker still reads 3,143 m. The name has no settled explanation: the best-known theory traces it to "Hua Xi Pan", a huge tottering slab of rock; another links it to a Hmong name meaning rhododendron mountain.

The first recorded ascents were by French soldiers in 1905, and Soviet engineers put up the first metal pyramid in 1985. The cable car opened in February 2016 with two Guinness records: longest non-stop three-rope cable car (6,292.5 m) and greatest elevation difference between stations (1,410 m). The Muong Hoa funicular, about 2 km long, followed in March 2018.

Getting there

  • Muong Hoa funicular: leaves from Sa Pa station inside Sun Plaza and reaches the cable-car station in under ten minutes; the simplest option if you are staying in the centre
  • By road: the cable-car station is about 5.5 km from Sun Plaza by taxi or motorbike
  • Cable car: about 15–20 minutes each way, up to 35 people per cabin, over rice terraces and then the old forest of Hoang Lien
  • Trek from Tram Ton: the trailhead is about 17.2 km from Sun Plaza at roughly 1,900 m; the trail is about 11 km one way, usually done in two days with a night at the 2,800 m camp. You must register through a licensed operator and walk with a guide and porters approved by Hoang Lien National Park

Photo stops and things to do

  • The 3,143 m marker: a triangular pyramid on the summit platform; expect a queue at weekends
  • Great Amitabha Buddha: a 21.5 m statue, visible from far off when the cloud lifts
  • Kim Son Bao Thang pagoda and the 11-storey tower: red-tiled temple courts just below the top

Best time to go

Mornings give the best chance of a clear summit; cloud builds through the afternoon. October to December is dry and clear with long views. December to March is cloud-hunting season and the coldest time. In spring, rhododendrons flower on the slopes at around 2,000–2,800 m.

Tips and safety

  • Bring a warm jacket: the top is about 7–10°C colder than town and windy, even in summer.
  • Above 3,000 m the air is thinner: walk slowly and rest between flights of steps. Older visitors and anyone with a heart or blood-pressure condition should take the summit funicular.

Combine in a day

Fansipan lies on the western side of town, the same direction as Cat Cat village, so the two pair best: summit in the morning, a rest at midday, Cat Cat in the afternoon. In the evening, stroll around Sun Plaza and the Stone Church. Silver Waterfall, Love Waterfall and O Quy Ho Pass are on the road towards Tram Ton and suit a separate day by motorbike.

Combine with paragliding

When you fly a paraglider over Muong Hoa Valley on a clear day, Fansipan stands to the west, almost at eye level. The two experiences look at the same Hoang Lien Son range from two different heights.

Both are best in the morning, so with two days give each its own morning. With only one day, the flight takes about 90 minutes in all, which still lets you fly in the morning and go up Fansipan in the early afternoon.

Quick questions

How long does the cable car to Fansipan take?

About 15–20 minutes each way. With the Muong Hoa funicular, the steps, time on top and the way down, allow about four hours.

Can children and older people go up?

Yes, if in good health. The 600 steps above 3,000 m are tiring, so take the summit funicular and dress warmly.

Can I trek Fansipan on my own?

No. You have to register and walk with a guide licensed by Hoang Lien National Park. The Tram Ton route is usually done in two days and one night.
