Lao Chai sits where Muong Hoa Valley is at its widest, about 9.3 km from Sun Plaza. Paragliders land in the fields beside Lao Chai bridge at about 1,000 m; the Sapa Paragliding office is at the end of the bridge, and the walk to Ta Van starts here.
What's here
Lao Chai is two things in one place: a village among rice terraces, and the landing field for the paragliding flights that take off from Hang Da village. From Lao Chai bridge you see both: timber roofs scattered up the hillside, and wings circling down one after another to touch down in the fields.
The landing field is a set of wide paddies on the valley floor, marked by a windsock. It changes colour with the season: flooded in May–June, green in July–August, golden in September; from October the rice has been cut.

A Black Hmong village
Lao Chai has long been home to the Black Hmong and is one of the larger villages of the Muong Hoa area. Its terraces are among the best-looking in Sapa because the slope is moderate and the paddies are long and softly curved; water from the mountain gullies runs through hundreds of them by gravity alone.
Women here still dye cloth with indigo and embroider by hand; walking past the houses you may see indigo cloth drying under the eaves and hear a loom at work. Only about 2 km downstream is Ta Van, a Giay village, where houses, dress and language are already different.
Landing and the Sapa Paragliding office
Flights take off at 1,500 m and come down here 8–15 minutes later. The pilot loses height gradually, you lift your legs forward and take a few steps with the momentum. Village children often come out to watch the wings arrive. After landing you take a photo with your pilot and receive your GoPro files and certificate; the team packs the wing and a car is waiting to take you back.
At the end of Lao Chai bridge stands a wooden-roofed house with PARAGLIDINGSAPA.COM across the front and a "Book paragliding here" sign on the door. This is the team's office at the edge of the landing field.

Getting there
- Motorbike or taxi: about 9.3 km from Sun Plaza along Muong Hoa Road, past Moana Sapa and the Hang Da take-off; a winding mountain road, roughly half an hour at an easy pace
- On foot from Sapa: via Cat Cat 2.9 km, Y Linh Ho 4.1 km, then 2.4 km to Lao Chai
- On to Ta Van: about 2 km along Muong Hoa stream, fairly level and fine for less active walkers
Photo stops and things to do
- Lao Chai bridge: views along Muong Hoa stream both ways, and the clearest spot for watching landings
- The landing field: wings against the paddies; stay at the edge and out of the touchdown area
- Sapa ancient rock field: on the valley trek, more than 200 carved boulders, a national relic since 1994; allow at least 45 minutes
- Portraits: ask before you photograph anyone

Best time to go
In May–June the flooded paddies mirror the sky, and paths can be slippery after afternoon rain. July–August is green and also the wettest. September is golden and the busiest month. October to December is dry, cool and clear, the most comfortable for walking even though the rice is cut. December to March is cold, with mist and low cloud.
Reference costs
Reference only (compiled in 2026); ask locally before you go.
- Village entrance fee (where charged): 40,000–150,000 VND
- Lunch at a homestay in Ta Van: 100,000–200,000 VND per person
- Local guide (optional): 300,000–500,000 VND per group
Tips and things to know
- Carry small cash: many places in the village do not take bank transfers.
- Shoes with grip, a light rain jacket and at least 1.5 litres of water for the walk; the weather changes fast.
Combine with paragliding
You land exactly where the walk begins, so flying first and walking after is the neatest way to pair them: no extra transport, and mornings usually have gentler, steadier wind. Having just seen the whole valley from above, you walk it with a map already in your head.
If you want to stay in Lao Chai, have lunch and carry on to Ta Van, tell the team in advance so they can arrange your pick-up.
