Overview

Ham Rong is a limestone mountain in the Hoang Lien Son range, right beside central Sapa. Its lowest point is about 1,450 m above sea level and its highest just over 1,800 m. The tourist area on the mountain has been developed since 1996 and covers roughly 148–150 hectares.

The route is stone-paved and stepped. It passes an orchid garden, flower gardens and the Thach Lam stone forest before reaching the viewpoints.

The legend of the dragon's jaw

The name means "dragon's jaw", after the shape of the rocky crest. Lao Cai Newspaper records two stories local people still tell. In the first, three dragon brothers flee a great flood; the two elder ones escape, but the youngest is trapped in a rocky cleft and turns to stone, becoming the mountain.

In the second, a pair of dragons lives at the foot of Hoang Lien. A deluge sweeps the male away down the Muong Hoa stream; the female stays and turns to stone, her head still raised towards the Hoang Lien Son range as if searching for her mate.

Getting there

From Sun Plaza or the square, walk towards the stone church; the entrance is directly behind it, about half a kilometre from the centre. A motorbike or taxi only gets you to the gate; from there it is an uphill walk with plenty of steps.

Older visitors should take it slowly, rest in the gardens and feel free to stop halfway rather than push on to the top.

Photo spots and things to do

  • Orchid and flower gardens: the first and easiest stretch, with flower beds and the name Ham Rong spelled out in plants
  • Thach Lam stone forest: paths threading between upright grey limestone pinnacles
  • Heaven's Gate 1 and 2 (Cổng Trời): two signed landmarks among the rocks on the stepped path higher up
  • Cloud Yard (Sân Mây): a high terrace looking down over the whole town and Sapa lake; in cloud-hunting season the clouds sometimes lie below you
  • The summit crags: the rock shapes behind the legend of the dragon turned to stone

Best time to come

October to December is sunny, dry and clear, with the longest views from the Cloud Yard. Cloud-hunting season runs from December to March; early mornings can bring a sea of cloud, but some days are simply thick fog and all you see is white.

Within the day, go up in the morning: the air is usually clearer and there are fewer people.

Reference costs

An adult ticket is about 70,000 VND; children pay less, and sources quote different amounts (reference only, from 2025 sources; check at the gate). Opening hours are usually given as roughly 7:00 to 18:00, though one source says 8:00–17:00.

Tips and safety

  • Wear trainers with grip; avoid flip-flops and heels. Wet stone steps are very slippery.
  • Bring a light jacket and a small raincoat: Sapa's weather changes fast.
  • At Heaven's Gate and the Cloud Yard, stay inside the railings when taking photos, especially in mist and wind.
  • In thick fog, save Ham Rong for another day; there will be nothing to see from the top.

Pairing it with other stops

Ham Rong pairs most naturally with Sun Plaza, the square and the stone church: you come down straight into the centre for dinner. If you want one more stop, Cat Cat village is about 2–3 km from Sun Plaza and Moana Sapa about 1.7 km; give each its own half-day.

Combine with paragliding

Ham Rong is in town, while the paragliding take-off is at Hang Da village, about 6 km from Sun Plaza on the Muong Hoa Valley side. They give two different views: one down onto the streets and the lake, the other along the rice terraces from the air.

A flight takes about 90 minutes hotel to hotel, so you can fly in the morning, have lunch in the centre and walk up Ham Rong in the afternoon without any extra driving.

Quick questions

How far is Ham Rong Mountain from central Sapa?

The entrance is right behind the stone church, about half a kilometre from the square, so it is a few minutes' walk to the gate.

How long does the walk take?

Allow a half-day if you want to reach the Cloud Yard and stop for photos in the gardens and stone forest. Seeing only the lower flower gardens is much quicker.

How much is the ticket?

About 70,000 VND for an adult according to 2025 sources. Treat it as a reference price and check at the gate.

Is it suitable for children or older travellers?

Yes, at a slow pace. The garden section is gentle; the climb to Heaven's Gate and the Cloud Yard has many steep steps, so wear shoes with grip and avoid rainy days.
