Overview

Moana is neither a historic site nor a village. It is a purpose-built photo park on the hillside south-east of town, and what makes it work is the position: the sets stand right at the edge of the slope, so almost every picture has Muong Hoa Valley and the mountains behind it.

People often call it a corner of Bali in Sapa, because several sets borrow from well-known Bali photo spots. There is an open-air café on the grounds and costume rental on site.

Getting there

From the centre follow Violet road towards Muong Hoa Valley; Moana is about one kilometre from the stone church and about 1.7 km by road from Sun Plaza.

  • On foot: fine, as it is a short distance; town roads are narrow and sloping, so keep to the edge
  • Motorbike: the handiest option if you are carrying on to Lao Chai and Ta Van afterwards
  • Taxi or electric buggy: good for groups, or if you are bringing outfits for the shoot

Photo spots and things to do

  • Bali Heaven's Gate (Cổng Trời Bali): a Balinese temple-style gateway with a reflective floor, facing the valley
  • Moana girl statue: a figure about 6 m tall, the set that shares the park's name
  • Golden Hand (Bàn Tay Vàng): a giant hand reaching out towards the valley, included in the ticket
  • Glass Bridge (Cầu Kính): a glass-bridge set, also included in the ticket
  • Infinity pool: a mirror-flat sheet of water with a white piano as a prop
  • Swing: set at the edge of the slope; follow the staff's instructions
  • Open-air café: somewhere to sit, looking straight down the valley

Best time to come

Within the day, opening time is best: at around 7:00 am the park is almost empty, the light is soft and there are no strangers in your photos. In cloud-hunting season, December to March, the valley below is often still under cloud early in the morning.

The backdrop changes with the rice calendar: flooded terraces in May and June, green rice in July and August, golden rice in September. October to December is sunny, dry and clear, with the sharpest view of the mountains.

  • Bundles with a drink or an outfit cost more; some sources list prices up to about 180,000 VND
  • Opens at 7:00 am; closing time varies by source, the earliest being 5:00 pm

Tips and safety

  • The sets stand at the edge of a steep slope: do not climb over railings or sit on barriers for a better angle.
  • Glass floors, stone surfaces and steps are slippery in rain or wet mist; wear shoes with grip rather than sandals.
  • On a foggy day you will not see the valley. If the mountain backdrop is the point, look at the sky before you buy a ticket.
  • The main sets get busier as the morning goes on; arriving early is the surest way to keep strangers out of your photos.
  • Allow about an hour, longer if you rent an outfit.

Pairing it with other stops

Moana is on the Muong Hoa side. Further along the same road are the paragliding take-off at Hang Da village, then the Lao Chai landing field and Ta Van village, so these stops fit together into one tidy half-day.

Do not pair Moana in the same half-day with Cat Cat village or the Fansipan cable-car station to the south-west, or you will cross the centre twice.

Combine with paragliding

Moana is on the same road that leads out to the paragliding take-off at Hang Da village, so the two fit neatly into one morning: photos at Moana first, then carry on to the launch without doubling back.

If your package includes pick-up, tell the Sapa Paragliding coordinators you are at Moana so the car collects you there. If morning wind pushes your flight later, you simply stay at Moana longer.
