Sun Plaza, the town square (locals call it "sân quần") and the stone church stand side by side in the middle of Sapa. Most outings start here, and every distance on this map is measured from Sun Plaza.

What's here

Sapa's three best-known landmarks sit within a few minutes' walk of each other. Sun Plaza is the yellow building with a green-domed clock tower; inside is Sapa station, the start of the Muong Hoa funicular. In front of it lies the square, a stone-paved bowl ringed by seating steps. Above the square stands the stone church, and behind the church is the way up Ham Rong Mountain. In the evening people come here to stroll, and at weekends the square often hosts performances by people from the surrounding villages.

The story of the church and the square

The stone church is built of dressed stone on a cross-shaped plan, and its Gothic character shows in the roof, the bell tower and the pointed arches. Sources disagree on the date: many articles say building began in 1895, while records of Sapa parish say the parish was founded in 1902 and the church completed around 1925. It was repaired and returned to worship in 1995.

The ground in front of the church used to be an open lot used for periodic markets and the "love market". According to Sun World, the square was built and opened in 2007 and covers about 7,000 m². The local name sân quần is still used alongside it.

The Muong Hoa funicular

The line opened in 2018. It runs for nearly 2 km through 2 tunnels and over 4 viaducts, linking Sapa station inside Sun Plaza with the Fansipan cable-car station in place of about 5.5 km of road.

A return ticket is about 200,000 VND (reference only, gathered August 2026; check before you go). The Fansipan cable car is ticketed separately.

Getting around and distances

Walk within the centre. A motorbike or taxi suits the stops further out. Road distances from Sun Plaza:

  • Ham Rong Mountain: entrance right behind the stone church, a few minutes on foot
  • Moana Sapa: about 1.7 km
  • Cat Cat village: about 2–3 km, walkable downhill
  • Fansipan cable-car station: about 5.5 km by road, or take the funicular from Sun Plaza
  • Paragliding take-off at Hang Da village: about 6 km
  • Lao Chai landing: about 9.3 km

Photo spots and things to do

  • Sun Plaza clock tower: the yellow façade and green dome, the town's usual meeting landmark
  • Stone church: at its best early in the morning while the forecourt is empty, and again when the lights come on
  • Saturday-night love market: a cultural evening on the ground in front of the church
  • Night market: not on the square itself; Sun World puts it about 1.5 km away

Best time to come

October to December is sunny, dry and clear. In cloud-hunting season, December to March, some mornings the church disappears into mist. September, when the rice turns gold, and public holidays are when the centre is busiest.

Tips and cautions

  • At weekends, on holidays, in golden-rice season and in cloud-hunting season the streets around the church jam up often. If you are meeting a driver, be early, as vehicles cannot wait long.
  • The church is a working place of worship: dress modestly and keep quiet during mass.
  • Ask before photographing children or villagers in traditional dress.
  • Go up Fansipan early: the summit is usually clearer in the morning than in the afternoon.

Pairing it with other stops

Your first half-day in Sapa can stay right here: breakfast near the church, a walk up Ham Rong Mountain, then back to the square in the evening. For anything further, pick one direction per half-day: south-west for Fansipan and Cat Cat village; south-east for Moana, the paragliding take-off, Lao Chai and Ta Van.

Combine with paragliding

Sun Plaza is Sapa Paragliding's meeting point if you prefer not to be collected at your hotel. Be there 15–30 minutes before the agreed time. The car takes you up to the take-off at Hang Da village, about 6 km away, and brings you back to the centre after you land in Lao Chai.

The whole outing takes about 90 minutes. There is no deposit; you pay at the flying site. Book on WhatsApp/Zalo +84 386 887 489; staff speak Vietnamese and English.
