Muong Hoa funicular: tickets, hours and the ride from Sun Plaza to the Fansipan cable car

A ride of about 6 minutes from the station inside Sun Plaza to the Fansipan cable car station, through tunnels and over viaducts above Muong Hoa Valley.

The Muong Hoa funicular links Sa Pa station, inside the Sun Plaza building in the town centre, with Muong Hoa station, where the cable car up Fansipan starts. The line is about 2 km long and opened on 31 March 2018; at the time it was the longest mountain railway in Vietnam. Most people ride it as the first leg of a Fansipan trip, but the six minutes on board are an experience in their own right.

Where it starts and ends

Sa Pa station is on the ground floor of Sun Plaza, the yellow building with the clock tower beside the central square and next to the MGallery hotel. It is a few minutes' walk from the Stone Church.

Muong Hoa station is the end of the line, right at the Fansipan cable car station. You step off the train at the cable car entrance.

Where to buy tickets and what they cost

These are reference prices gathered in March–May 2026; check at the counter or on the ticketing site.

  • At the counter: the ticket office at Sa Pa station, ground floor of Sun Plaza
  • Online: through Sun World Fansipan Legend or ticket agents; buy ahead at weekends and on holidays to skip the queue
  • Return ticket: about 200,000 VND per person; adults and children 1–1.4 m tall pay the same (Sun World, March 2026)
  • Children under 1 m: free with an adult
  • Combos: packages with the funicular plus the Fansipan cable car (plus the summit train or lunch) cost more; if you are going to the top, a combo is usually simpler than separate tickets

Return or one-way?

The usual ticket is a return: ride down to Muong Hoa station, take the cable car, then come back to Sun Plaza by train. If you want to go one way only (for example ride down and return by taxi or motorbike), ask at the counter, as published prices list return tickets only.

Opening hours

Trains run throughout the day, roughly every 10–15 minutes. Sources give different hours: the first train around 7:15–8:15 and the last around 16:00–16:30, with slightly longer hours at weekends and on holidays.

If you are heading up Fansipan, go early: the cable car is quieter and the summit is usually clearer in the morning.

Why take the train

  • Quick and predictable: by road the cable car station is 15–20 minutes from town; the train takes about 6 minutes and avoids traffic and parking
  • Starts in the middle of town: the station is inside Sun Plaza, within walking distance of most hotels
  • Straight to the cable car: you get off at the Fansipan cable car entrance
  • Easy for older travellers and children: a smooth ride, roomy seats and no climbing

The view on the way

Leaving Sun Plaza, the train passes through 2 tunnels and over 4 viaducts along the hillside. Outside town the windows open onto Muong Hoa Valley, with rice terraces and Hmong villages below and the Hoang Lien Son range and Fansipan ahead. On cloudy mornings the train seems to run along the band of cloud lying across the valley.

On board

  • Classic European-style carriages: two cars built by Garaventa of Switzerland, each 20 m long and 3 m wide, carrying up to 200 passengers
  • Big windows: views on both sides; for valley photos stand by the windows at the end of the car
  • Two photogenic stations: Sa Pa station in Sun Plaza and Muong Hoa station are both popular photo stops

Combine with paragliding

Sun Plaza is both the train station and Sapa Paragliding's pick-up point, so the two fit neatly into one day: fly over Muong Hoa Valley in the morning (about 90 minutes from pick-up to drop-off), then take the train and cable car up Fansipan in the afternoon, or the other way round. No deposit; pay at the flying site.
